took 401K distribution and want to convert to ROTH
I requested a distribution from my 401K on dec 20, 2007 and was planning to open a Roth according to ED’s book pages 217 to 220. When i contacted Fidelity to get advice on possible forms , they said it might take awhile to get an answer. The next day they called and said I couldn’t do it for 2007. New rules in 2008 will allow this type of withdrawal/conversion. Are they correct and I have misinterpreted the Author?

One can go direct in 2008. In 2007, it had to go to a TIRA first, then to a Roth.

As Al indicated, the regular 401k to Roth conversion was not available for distributions prior to 1/1/08. However, note that pages 217 and 218 in “Go Roth” are referring to rollovers from a ROTH 401K to a Roth IRA, not from a regular 401k. This may be part of the problem.
Do you have a Roth 401k account? I assume that your distribution request was cancelled?

Thank you for the quick responses, I thought it would be days before receiving an answer.
