Late IRA Contributions

I have a client who lives in a designated flood zone in Missouri. All people in the flood zone were given an automatic extension on their filing deadline by the IRS. My client’s accountant is telling me that extended deadline applies to IRA contributions as well. The letter that is posted on the IRS website does not specifically mention IRA’s as being included in the extension. An IRS representative tells me that, if IRA’s are not mentioned explicitly, it is implied that the extended deadline does not apply to them.

Any thoughts on this? Who’s right — the IRS rep or the accountant?

Thanks.

The IRS is correct. The applicable IRS Notice will list the exceptions granted under the Notice. The IRA contribution extension is not automatic and would need to be listed.
