Congress Postpones Vote on Pension Relief Package

Issue: Pension Relief

Date: November 20, 2008

Action Taken: On November 20, the lame duck 110th Congress left Washington without voting on a pending pension relief package that provides a waiver of minimum required distribution (MRD) rules for 2009, and allows some limited pension plan funding relief. Congressional leadership left open the possibility of calling the lawmakers of the 110th Congress back into session in the middle of December (to deal with whether to lend the struggling auto manufacturers some $25 billion.) If that happens, there’s a reasonably good chance lawmakers will deal with the pension relief package at that time.
