If the TIRA contribution for 2008 is made by April 15 does the tax return need to be filed by April 15th? In other words can you go on extension and still have made a 2008 contribution as long as its in by April 15 ?

You can make the contribution by 4/15 (postmark date) regardless of what you do about the tax return, including even a failure to file. However, in order to take advantage of the extended due date for recharacterizations or corrections of excess contributions, the tax return needs to be either filed by 4/15 or extended by 4/15.
