Use of Roth Conversion for RMD
Can a partial conversion from a 401k to an existing Roth IRA be used to satisfy a RMD? Even if the converted amount exceeds the calculated RMD minimum? Of course, any required taxes would be paid during the conversion. Thanks for anyone’s help on this issue.

An RMD cannot be converted to a Roth. If you must take an RMD, the first distribution in the calendar year is the RMD – so only a later distributiion could be converted. Since there are no RMDs for 2009, a partial conversion from a 401k would not be a problem. In 2010, you need to take the RMD first.
