RMD for a Trust

I have a client who is the trustee of a special needs trust for his sister, whose date of birth is 10-25-1983. There are two trust, one for the Beneficiary IRA and the second for the Beneficiary Roth IRA. Is the trust required to take an RMD based on the trust beneficiaries date of birth for the tax year 2010?

Distributions from a beneficiary IRA and a beneficiary Roth IRA are both required in 2010. The starting point is the trust beneficiary’s age in the year after the death. If the original owner of the accounts died in 2009, you start with the beneficiary’s age in 2010 which is 27. The factor fot that from the single-life table is 56.2 – you’d divide the 12/31/2009 balance by 56.2 for the 2010 distribution for each account. The 2011 RMD would use a fact or 55.2, 2012 would be 54.2 etc etc

If the death occurred in an earlier year, these factors would be different. You always start with the age of the beneficiary in the year following the death.
