In order for an IRA conribution to be eligible for the retire. savings contrib. credit on page 2 of the 1040…can contrib’s made the following year, but prior to April 15 count towards this credit? Or does this credit work on a calendar year basis?

2009 IRA contributions made between 1/1/2010 and 4/15/2010 would count toward the 2009 credit, but any contributions made for 2010 would NOT count.
