Client passed away after and was a Medi/Medi

I have a client who passed away. But while he was still alive he received fairly extensive medical treatment. He was a enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. He left behind a small Ira and had a $100K in life insurance. His wife is the beneficiary of both.
Can medicaid attach the proceeds of the life insurance to pay the bills?
Thanks
Brian

This varies by state law, but generally I believe that if the surviving spouse is the life insurance beneficiary rather than the estate and the decedent did not hide any assets when qualifying for Medicaid, there would be be no claim on the insurance proceeds.
