404k ESOP dividends for RMD

I have a 404K ESOP from Verizon, managed by Fidelity Investments. I receive quarterly dividends from this account, and a 1099-R from this account. I want to know if these dividends can be used toward my RMD? The dividend totals are greater than the RMD amount I would owe for the year. Fidelity tells me that the dividends cannot be used toward the RMD, and I will have to take the RMD in addition to the dividends from this account. On the 1099-R form, in Box 7 there is a letter U. Is this significant in not being allowed to used the dividend toward my RMDS? Who determines this…Fidelity, Verizon, or IRS? I would like to use just the dividends to satisfy the RMD. I don’t want to take the dividends and RMD from this account as it would be too much money coming out of this account for the year. Thanks for you help.

Per IRS regulations cited in 1.401(a)(9)-5 Q 9 b (5), section 404(k) dividends as denoted by the U code are not credited toward the annual RMD for the plan.
