IRA

Would a retired 68 year old be able to roll-over current IRA to a self-directed IRA and what would be the advantages? Also, can a client with 3 IRA’s and a 457 take RMD’s from just one instead of some from all accounts?

Rollover to a self directed IRA can be done anytime, but someone nearing RMDs must be sure that there is liquidity in at least one of the IRAs to satisfy the RMD for all. Self directed includes a wide variety of alternate investments that perform differently from each other and from traditional investments. This might result in varying investment performance. IRA RMDs can be aggregated among other IRA accounts, but the 457 RMD must be satisfied separately.
