Last date that IRA conversion can be recharacterized.
Will I still be able to wait until Oct 15 2018 to recharacterize my IRA conversion for tax year 2017? Or would it be safer to recharacterize before I submit my 2017 tax return?

There is some confusion as to whether a 2017 conversion can be recharacterized after 12/31 or not. If you are concerned with being stuck with your full conversion done this year, you would need to recharacterize before year end, and not wait until 2018 at all. Further, with the year end Holidays any recharacterization request should be submitted around the 21st or 22nd to be sure enough time is left to process. The processing time will vary by custodian.
