Contribute to Both Simple IRA and Roth IRA in Same Year, OK?

My married daughter has been contributing to both her employer sponsored Simple IRA ($12,000 max) and her Roth IRA ($5,500 max) for the last two years she has been employed with this “new employer”.

Q. This is acceptable under the IRS rules, right?

Previously she contributed to both her employers sponsored 401k ($18,000 max) and her Roth IRA ($5,500 max) for the 5 years she worked there.

TIA

Yes, that is fine as long as her modified AGI is not too high to qualify for a Roth contribution.

Thanks Alan!Just reviewing the forum and have this new question.Daughter had to do “back door Roth contributions” in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 but was able to go in the front door in 2016 and 2017 due to reduced Modified AGI in new job(s). Q. Max Modified AGI for 2018 to Qualify for Roth IRA contribution?

For joint filers the 2018 Roth IRA MAGI phaseout range is increased to 189k to 199k, so the phaseout starts at 189k.

Be aware that SIMPLE IRA balances are included in Roth conversion pro rata taxation. If/when her MAGI makes her no longer eligible for Roth contributions. The SIMPLE IRA balances will interfere with a Backdoor Roth.

Hey Hi Friends , this is Aemm Wilson , and I’m Bachelor of Arts in Law & Society at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The following year, she went on to complete her Masters Certificate while studying abroad in Spain. Attorney Shaffer thereafter completed her Juris Doctorate degree in San Diego, California in 2002 and was proudly admitted to the State Bar of California in November 2002. Prior to her legal career, Attorney Shaffer had an extensive and diverse work history, which helped her gain skills that have proven invaluable to her legal practice. As an Attorney, she worked for the underserved at the San Diego Labor Board. She then joined a legal defense firm where she represented large insurance companies and hotels located throughout California. Shortly after, Attorney Shaffer opened her own firm so she could provide clients with exceptional legal representation and personalized client service of a different caliber than she had experienced thus far. She started the Asset Protection & Elder Law Center with her like-minded partner Patrick P. Phancao, in an effort to build a law practice dedicated to providing the level of sophisticated legal representation one would expect at a large firm combined with the personal attention of a boutique firm. To date, the firm receives the majority of its business through referrals, which shows the commitment and quality representation the two partners have provided to their clients. Since its formation, the Asset Protection & Elder Law Center and its staff have shown an uncompromising commitment to client service and responsiveness.
