Contributing to a Spousal Roth if spouse is over 70
Hello. I have a client who is approaching 70 1/2. She has to begin taking her RMD from her retirement plan at work. Her husband is more than 10 years younger than her and still working. She asked if she could fund her Roth IRA with proceeds from her RMD. We plan to use the joint life expectancy table to calculate her RMD. Thanks.

As long as their joint modified AGI permits, she can make a spousal Roth contribution using his earned income to qualify for the contribution but can use the funds from her own retirement plan to actually make the Roth contribution.
