457 Contribution Limit

I have a client that is a Service Member in the Air Force National Guard. He can save money from his drill paycheck into the TSP (Thrift Savings Plan – DOD’s 401k). He drills on weekends so this is a part time job for him. He works full time as a police officer for the city of Cincinnati and has a 457 through Ohio Deferred Compensation. His employer does not offer a 401k. What are his contribution limits to the TSP and 457? $18500 total or $18500 to each. I’m confused since he has 2 employers – one offers a 401k (TSP) the other does not.

  • There is one employee elective contribution limit (2018 = $18,500) across all 401k, 403b, SIMPLE and SARSEP IRA qualified plans.
  • A 457b is a non-qualified plan that has a separate contribution limit (2018 = $18,500) for the total of employee elective and employer contributions.
