Combining Two Beneficiary IRA’s Into One
Hoping you can help…here is the scenario. Wife has an IRA and passes away. Husband inherits the IRA from deceased spouse and has it put into his name. Their only child gets listed as the sole beneficiary on the IRA that originally belonged to the wife AND gets listed on the IRA that the husband had for himself. There are now two IRA’s. Son is the beneficiary on both (the husbands original IRA and the husbands “new” IRA that came from his deceased spouse). A month or so later, the husband passes away. Now the son inherits both IRA’s in the form of a beneficiary IRA. Can the two IRA’s be combined into one beneficiary IRA?

Yes, they can be combined since the husband had rolled the inherited IRA into his own name as owner. As a result, the son is the designated beneficiary on both accounts. Both are inherited directly from the IRA owner (father) and will have the same inherited RMD divisor.
