First RMD from 403(b) and IRA
Client has 403(b) account balance AND an IRA account balance. He is turning 70 1/2 on 12/15/18. Is it possible to delay distribution on the 403(b) account until 1st quarter of 2019 BUT take RMD from IRA this year? Question is can he defer until first quarter of 2019 his first RMD from the 403(b)? Will it preclude him from taking RMD from IRA this year under IRS rules? Can they be treated as different bodies or does the fact that he started taking RMD from the IRA this year force him to also treat the 403(b) the same and take an RMD from it.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, he can defer all or part of the 403b RMD for 2018 to the first quarter, and he still has the choice to defer all or part of his IRA RMD in the same manner. What he chooses for the 403b has no effect on his IRA RMDs.
