QCD – acknowledgement of donations
On or about 12/7/18, I instructed financial institution to issue 3 separate checks payable to one charity from my TIRA as QCD for 2018. On December 15, I received and forwarded the 3 checks in one envelope to the charity with a covering letter requesting acknowledgements. I called the charity in early February and left a detailed voice mail message since I have not received said acknowledgements. On February 6, they sent me separate acknowledgements for 2 or the 3 contributions. Since then I left repeated voice mail messages about the one missing acknowledgement…to no avail. I’ve contributed to them in prior years without a problem. Any suggestions for how to proceed? Thank you.

You should pursue receipt of the same acknowledgment letter that a non QCD donation requires. I would verify with the custodian that the check was cashed and the date, then use that info to press the charity for this letter. The IRS has not clarified that the date of check mailing is not sufficient, but it is preferable to have the check cashed by 12/31. Finally, suggest you consider a different charity this year if this one will not respond knowing they received the check.
