Beneficiary IRA RMDs

Dear Alan et al,

My client passed away in October 2018 and I am working to calculate the required minimum distribution for 3 daughter primary beneficiaries.

We created the separate inherited IRAs and they balance was distributed earlier this month. I am using my client’s 12.31.18 balance ($42,446.59) and am multiplying it by each beneficiary’s respective share (33.34%, 33.33%, 33.33%) to help determine each daughter’s RMD for 2019.

We would then use each daughter’s age this calendar year to determine the initial life expectancy and then use the “reduction method” to reduce life expectancy in each future year since they are non-spouse beneficiaries.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Chris, spot on with respect to the beneficiary RMDs. Note that the 2018 year of death RMD (if any) had to be completed by the decedent OR the beneficiaries in any combination.
