The five year waiting period for Roth contributions starts in the year for which the first Roth contribution is made. Conversions will have their own separate five year waiting periods.

Your regular Roth IRA contributions can be withdrawn anytime without tax or penalty. There is a 5 year holding period for taxable conversions until age 59.5 to avoid the 10% penalty.
