If I receive a charity magazine or newsletter that has some value, can I subtract that value from the QCD amount, or is the entire amount of the QCD void?

These items are probably considered of “incidental value” of no particular value to you. You just need to get the written acknowledgement stating that you received no value for the donation.
If you do receive something of value, the entire QCD is voided. You cannot subtract the value and claim the difference when the donation is a QCD.
