Inherited Roth IRA distribution
Nancy born 1945 age 79 in 2024 inherited a Roth IRA from Tina in 2016 when Tina died at age 82.
This inherited IRA from Tina, a friend, has a balance of $100,000 as of 12/31/23. The Roth IRA distribution for 2024
is $9803.92 computed as $100,000 divided by 10.2, the factor in the Single Life Table.
Nancy has also a Roth IRA with a balance of $50,000 as of 2/31/23. Questions:
- Can Nancy take the $9803.92 only from from the Roth IRA she inherited from Tina?
- Or Nancy could take the distribution from Nancy’s own Roth IRA with a balance of $50,000
- Nancy has also a traditional regular IRA with a balance of $150,000 as of 12/31/23. Could this $9803.92 RMD from Tina’s Roth IRA could be taken from Tina’s inherited Roth IRA?

Yes, the inherited Roth RMD can only be taken from the inherited Roth.
If there is also an inherited TIRA, that RMD can only be taken from the inherited TIRA. Inherited IRA RMDs can never be satisfied by taking a distribution from an owned IRA and vice versa.
