Inherited IRA final RMD

After an IRA is inherited can the decedent’s final RMD be a QCD or must it be a taxable distribution? Thanks.

The year of death RMD that was uncompleted by the decedent is the responsibility of the beneficiary. If the beneficiary has reached 70.5 by the time of the distribution, a QCD can be made by the beneficiary. If there are more than one beneficiary over 70.5, all such beneficiaries can make QCDs with their respective distributions. In other words, there are no special limitations for QCDs simply because a distribution is the uncomplete year of death distribution. If the year of death RMD is distributed to the estate as beneficiary, the estate may not claim a QCD even if the estate passes through the distribution to a beneficiary.
