2019 RMD deferred to 2020
Individual turned 70 1/2 in 2019 and decided to defer 2019 RMD to April 1, 2020. Because of the CARES Act, he decided not to take this deferred RMD in 2020. He did not take any RMDs at all in 2020.
For 2021, will he need to take his first RMD ever by April 1, 2021 or can he take it by year end 2021?
Thanks,

He was one of the few fortunate ones under the CARES Act that actually had 2 years of RMDs waived, 2019 deferred to RBD, and 2020. While the 2021 RMD will actually be his first, he needs to take that RMD by 12/31/2021. He cannot defer it to 4/1/2022, which is possibly what you intended to ask. He does not have to take any RMD by 4/1/2021.
