SSDI to Retirement Benefit at FRA

When a client reaches full-retirement age, would there ever be a situation that a retirement benefit is reduced? My understanding is that the benefit continues on unreduced – and simply converts from a disability benefit to a retirement benefit. Thank you.

  • Yes, it continues as is with annual COLAs.
  • With respect to the client inheriting an IRA after SSDI has switched to old age benefits, there is a question whether that client would still be an EDB based on disability or not. Example – parent passes at 89 and leaves IRA to child age 68. Is child still treated as disabled if the SSDI has swithed over to retirement?
