Simple IRA contributions prior year

Client is a S corp. Made 7K of contributions in 2022. She has contributed $1,000 per month in 2023.

Client is filing taxes now (Oct 15 deadline). I spoke with accountant about “recoding” the contributions made in 2023 to 2022. We plan to recode the contributions to 2022, which will consist of recoding $7,000 in employee contributions and $1,418 in employer contributions.

I wanted to make sure BOTH employee and employer contributions can be made up until tax filing deadline. Furthermore, a 5498 was already issued by the custodian for prior year contributions. Will the custodian need to issue a corrected 5498 after we make changes?

  • The 2023 salary deferrals are not permitted to be recoded as 2022 contributions because any election periods provided by the plan for 2022 salary deferrals have long since passed.  This means that any election for 2022 salary deferrals had to be made before the end of 2022.  2022 salary deferrals were required to have been deposited within 30 days of being withheld from 2022 salary.
  • With no change to 2022 salary deferrals, there can be no change to 2022 matching contributions.
