Deceased Spouse RMD
T-IRA owner, 90 died earlier this year prior to taking his 2023 RMD
Surviving spouse sole beneficiary.
Question
Is the deceased spouse’s RMD taken from his account? Or transfer the assets into the surviving spouse’s name and then take the RMD?
All assistance is appreciated

Very few custodians would allow a distribution from the decedent’s IRA. The balance would have to be transferred to an inherited IRA under the SSN of the beneficiary. The beneficiary could then either take the 2023 RMD from the inherited IRA, or could assume ownership of the inherited IRA and take the RMD from the newly owned IRA.
