Suspending Medicare Part A after signing up

Does anyone know if you can opt-out/suspend Medicare Part A after signing up (with Social Security at age 65)? Individual still has creditable employer health insurance coverage and wants to opt-out of Part A so that they can resume HSA contributions.

  • Why did you file a Social Security (SS) claim if you were still working with credible employer heath insurance coverage. It is almost always better to delay claiming SS if you have the financial means.
  • If you are claiming SS benefits, Medicare (MC) enrollment is automatic and mandatory.
  • If you want to continue HSA contributions, it has been < 12 months and you haven't unenrolled before. You can unenroll from SS using Form SSA-521 Request for Withdrawal of Application. You mighte have to unenroll from Medicare separately.
  • If the unerollment is approved, the SSA will send you a bill for any SS benefits already paid.
  • I do not believe you can recover any Medicare premiums or restore HSA eligibility for the period while receiving SS benefits.
  • If you are successful in restoring future HSA eligibility. You need to be aware that when enrollinging in Medicare after age 65, there is an up to six month (but not before age 65)  retroactive enrollment. This will make you ineligible to make HSA contributions during this period. If the contributions have already been made. They will be excess contributions and must be removed with earnings.
