2010 Conversion – Traditional IRA also has an inherited IRA

Client has an IRA inherited from his mother, he’s married and files jointly. IRA is titled in the name of the deceased FBO the him.

He wants to open an IRA of his own. Combined AGI is approx. $200k and both he and his wife particpate in retirement plans at work so he is phased out for Roth. I was going to use a non-deductible traditional IRA and then convert to Roth in 2010. If he converts in 2010, will he have to convert the inherited IRA as well? Don’t want to see him lose the stretch.

Thanks,
SK

No. Inherited IRAs cannot be converted to Roth IRAs.
