Inherited 403b

A husband is the sole beneficiary to his wife’s 403b. I understand that he can roll this into a new IRA of his own but if he simply re-registers the 403b as his own 403b, does he then have to wait for a minimum length of time before he can roll this 403b into his own IRA?

He cannot make the 403b his own, but he can continue it in beneficiary form if he wishes. This can have an affect on RMDs and also on any potential early withdrawal penalty from his own IRA if he is under 59.5.

There is no waiting period. A sole spouse beneficiary can roll their interest over to their own IRA any time they wish, right away or years later.

The best strategy depends on knowing both ages including the wife’s age at her death.
