Heckerling

I have signed up and will attend this yrs Heckerling Estate planning conference.
This yrs focus is on Qualified plans and related Estate planning issues.

Now I am second guessing if this is a smart move. Like most folks I have lost a ton in the market this yr and need to converse cash.

This conference as I understand it is for attorneys and will feature the best in the business like Natalie Choate. I am not an attorney at at this stage of the game will never be. My thinking in signing up was that I have already atended a few of Ed’s 2 day seminars , read all the usual books , read Ed’s news letters etc but now I want to ramp up my game so to speak and thought Heckerling is a good way to do so.

Is it over kill for a non attorney who cannot give legal advice anyway? Can anyone who may have attended Heckerrling in the past give me some input?

I can always cancel for a minor hit at this point.

Thank You

I haven’t been there (a week is a major commitment, and December is our busiest time of the year, so in January we’re catching up on the non-urgent matters that got pushed out of the way by the year-end transactions in December), but I read summaries of the proceedings several times a day during the program; I attend presentations afterward summarizing key portions of the program; and I read the book each year that contains the papers presented by the speakers.

While most of the attendees are lawyers, many of whom are well-regarded, there are a considerable number of non-lawyers who attend.

If you’re not a lawyer, you’ll probably find the program to be on a more advanced level than anything you’ve attended in the past. But you shouldn’t let that stop you.

Bruce thanks for your thought. BTW last yr I read your piece in Leimberg Informaton Servives on the Ten Biggest Mistakes of Retirement Plans.
It really forced me to stretch my understanding of all the issues and made me realize that if I’m going to really learn this stuff I have to absorb all the output from persons yourself , Alan and Natalie.

To make an anaolgy … going to Heckerling for a week is like getting to play in a band for a week with players like Clapton and Page…. while I may never have their chops my licks can only get better.

Bruce…

Could you give us a link to your article on Ten Biggest Mistakes in Retirement Plans?

Thank you.
