ROTH Conversion Election Joint?
I am working with a married couple each with Traditional IRA’s. Does anyone know if the election to defer on a joint return is a joint or individual election? I would like to have one of the spouses convert enough to fill up the 2010 15% marginal income tax bracket, and then have the other spouse convert twice that amount and elect to defer the recognition until 2011 and 2012 respectively. This will only work if the election is per individual. Thanks Glen Snell

Does anybody have a ref that can be relied on for this?

Alan’s responses are about as reliable as you can get.
