Roth conversion

Can one still convert an IRA for 2009 as long as it’s done before April 15, 2010?

No. The distribution for a 2009 conversion would have had to be done by year end 2009.

But if you are looking to increase your taxable income in 2009 and increase your Roth holdings, and if you made a deductible TIRA contribution for 2009, you could recharacterize that contribution to a Roth IRA contribution. The 2009 income limits for a regular Roth contribution are higher than the conversion income limit was for 2009, so if you could have converted then you could fund a Roth contribution. Of course, you must have earned income in 2009 for a regular contribution.
