I have a client that wants to save for her grandchild’s college education. The family lives in NY, as they have a 529 plan from Vanguard. I don’t really like
the investment choices available from the plan, as I don’t think the prospects for US Bonds or a broad US Stock portfolio has much potential for gains over the
next 10 or so years. I’d like to get sector funds in the plan – especially emerging market debt and equities. But I didn’t see that these funds are not available in the Vanguard NY platform. The tax advantages of 529 plans for NY residents seem to have excellent tax advantages, so if I can find a way to invest as I’d like a 529 plans seems like a great vehicle. The Grandmother wants to save $13,000 per year per child. Does anyone have any Ny clients that save for college? What do you do for funding? Thanks.
