RMD for dec’d prior to RBD
Individual passes away in the year they turn 70 1/2, but prior to their RBD. The beneficiary has to calculate and distribute the RMD as if the decedent were still alive. Question is: do they have to take that RMD by 12/31 or do they have until April 1st of the following year?

The required beginning date is April 1 after age 70-1/2 is attained. Because the individual was not alive on the required beginning date, no RMD is required from the decedent. The beneficiary will commence RMDs in 2011.
