R/O IRA gifted into 529 Plan
Maybe this question was asked already but can’t find the answer to my question.
I’m a grandpa and was thinking of gifting $13,500 to each of my 3 grandchildren.
Can I do this as a direct conversion from R/O IRA which is tax deffered into 3 seperate 529 plans for my grandchildren????
I don’t want to pay the tax on the $40,500 and wondering if this is feasible???????
Thanks in advance for any responses and to all have a Happy Holiday season.

Unfortuneately, you cannot roll an IRA into a 529 plan. You would have to take a distribution, report the taxable income, and then make the cash contribution to the 529 plans.
The max gift tax exclusion is 13,000 this year, not 13,500. It increases to 14,000 in 2013.
