New SIMPLE IRA self-employed contribution deadline

I’m self-employed and decided to open a SIMPLE IRA this week of 3/10/13.

From what I’ve read, my employee contribution (50+ $14,000) should have been made by 1/31. Have I missed the deadline for 2012 and should just start for 2013?

It’s too late for 2012. Perhaps you should consider a SEP IRA for 2012.
