Individual Marries Younger Woman

Individual, now age 85, married a woman, now age 70, 2 years ago. He was taking RMD’s from his IRA under the Uniform Lifetime Table. Can he now switch to the Joint Life table since his new wife is more than 10 years younger? (The difference in divisors is 14.8 vs. 17.9)

If the IRA owner’s spouse is the sole primary beneficiary during the entire distribution calendar year, and the spouse is more than then ten years ounger than the IRA owner, the applicable distribution period factor is determiend using the joint life  expectancy table and not the Uniform Life Table.  Such joint life expectancy is determined using the IRA owner’s and the spouse’s attained ages on their birthdays in the distribution calendar year.IRA Desk Reference page 9.7
