RMDs from different plan types

How exactly does it work when taking RMDs from different types of retirement plans? If a person as multiple accounts (IRAs, 403bs, 401ks etc) can they just take the RMD from one of the accounts? Or do the distributions have to be taken separately from the differing accounts in some fashion?

  • The RMDs can be aggregated (calculated separately but the total then taken in any combination from the accounts) for IRA accounts and 403b accounts, but the IRA RMDs must be taken separately from the 403b RMDs. In other words, IRAs with other IRAs and 403b with other 403b accounts only.
  • All other plans must each satisfy their own RMD with no aggregation. For example, if there are two 401k plans, then the RMD for each must be distributed from the applicable plan.
  • The above apply to owned plans. For inherited 403b and IRA accounts, RMDs can be aggregated only if inherited from the same decedent.
