Spousal RMD – within12 months of spouse’s death

The wife died in late 2014. The husband will transfer the IRA to his own in 2015. Can the husband delay doing any 2015 IRA RMD until the transfer to his IRA? Both spouses are in their 80s.

Many thanks … Mary

Husband must complete his wife’s 2014 RMD if it had not been satisfied. He would file a 5329 to request a penalty waiver with their final joint 2014 return.  Husband can delay RMDs on her IRA account if the account is moved by direct transfer, but not if he takes a distribution from her IRA. Once combined into his own IRA, his 2015 RMD will be the total of what his own would have been if separate plus the RMD calculated on the balance of the inherited IRA on 12/31/2014 and using the same divisor he uses on his own.
