MFS way to save

If someone is married filing separate and their spouse has a retirement plan, could they make a non-deductible traditional IRA contribution and later convert it to a Roth, as long as they have sufficient earned income?

Yes. A spousal contribution is not allowed for MFS filers, but for each spouse with enough income earned personally, a back door Roth can be executed.
