RMD AMOUNTS

I am the beneficiary of my mothers IRA. If I were to take more than the required RMD amount from that account in any year, could the excess be applied to satisfy the RMD total on my own IRA accounts?

I might mention I purchased one of your books on the advice of a Chicago Tribune writer and found it very helpful in how to proceed with the inherited IRA of my mother.

Thanks for any help.

  • No, the excess cannot be applied directly to owned IRAs, or even to next year’s RMD from the inherited IRA. Indirectly however, taking out more than the RMD will reduce the account balance and therefore reduce all future RMDs for the inherited IRA by a small amount each year.
