Inherited IRA/ Beneficial IRA

Sam (57 years old) inherited an IRA from his dad. He is taking RMD’s. Can he use the (QCD) Qualified Charitable Distribution for his RMD being that he is not 70.5 years old?

  • No.  The individual for whose benefit the IRA is maintained (Sam, in this case) must be age 70½ or older at the time of the QCD.  This is addressed in IRS Notice 2007-7, Q&A-37:  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-07-07.pdf
  • Sam can instead claim a Schedule A charitable deduction for the contribution.
