qcd from ira inherited by a trust with trust beneficiary over age 70.5

Dear Alan et al,

A few years ago someone submitted a question asking whether an IRA that has been inherited by a trust can utilize a qualified charitable distribution. At the time, there didn’t appear to be much IRS guidance on this topic.

I understand that an IRA inherited by an individual over age 70.5 can utilize a QCD but do we know anything more about whether an IRA inherited by a trust can do this if the trust beneficiary is over age 70.5?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Chris, still not aware of any IRS guidance, however because a trust does not have an age, and the qualified trust rules for calculating an RMD based on the age of the oldest trust beneficiary only apply for purposes of calculating the RMD per Sec 401(a)(9), and not for any other purposes, it appears that a QCD can only be done for distributions made directly to an individual.
