Eligible organizations must be ones that you could otherwise take an itemized deduction for contributions, however most private foundations and all donor advised funds are excluded. You must get the same receipt for contributions that would be required if you were to itemize instead. Most QCD checks are issued by the IRA custodian, but IRA owners with check writing can write their own checks to the charity.
