One of the strategies in reducing nursing home expense is for a person in nursing home to start IRA account minimum RMD withdraws. While these withdraws would be used for paying part of the Nursing home expenses — Medicaid would still pay the difference. However, if the person dies while in the nursing home and there is still remaining assets in his IRA account after his death — can Medicaid recover those IRA assets for Medicaid paid portion of the Nursing home expenses? Or these remaining assets would be transferred directly to the beneficiary of the IRA account avoiding after death Medicaid lien?
