Does anyone know if IRAs were subject to RMDs when they were created in 1974 or was that a later addition (and if so when)?

  • Yes, RMDs were required from the beginning.
  • 26 U.S. Code § 408, including § 408(a)(6), and 26 U.S. Code § 4974 were added with SEC. 2002 (the section that established IRAs) of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and applies to taxable years beginning after December 31, 1974.
