RMD for deceased Parent
Hello. A client passed away this year before taking his RMD. He left his IRA to his two sons. We moved half to a bene. IRA for each. The first son took a full distribution of his 1/2. The second son left his alone. Does the second son have to take a RMD this year for his Dad, or did the first son fulfill it by taking a full distribution? Thanks.

The first son completed the year of death RMD, so the other son does not have to distribute anything for this purpose. The IRS Regs only state that the year of death RMD that was not completed must be completed by “a beneficiary”. Therefore, any of the beneficiaries can complete it in any combination.
