QCD from IRA and 401k

At age 70 1/2 participants must start to take RMD from regular IRA and regular 401K.
Is my understanding correct that you can take RMD from a regular IRA and give them to
a charity directly (QCD) and pay no federal income tax.
Can you do the same from a regular 401k and use the RMD ( or a portion thereof) as a QCD and also not pay federal income tax
on that distribution to the charity

A QCD can only be done from an IRA account, not a 401k. The check must be made out to a qualifying charity but these are usually mailed to the IRA owner for delivery. The IRA owner must also have reached 70.5 to the day to do a QCD.

Follow up.  Can you do the QCD if you  leave work and then convert the 401k to an IRA?  Of course you have to be 70.5 years old
