Did not receive 1099-R for deceased father’s IRAS

Thank you for your help.
Dad died in July 2019. Traditional and Roth IRAs were transferred to mom. All at same broker. Dad took distributions from IRAs in 2019 before death to my knowledge. In 2018 Dad received 1099-R forms. None in 2019. Tax preparer is looking for 1099-Rs for dad. Broker says there are none.
What am I missing?

  • If the IRA custodian states that no 1099R forms were issued for 2019, then Dad did not take an RMD from this IRA in 2019. Any chance he could have completed his total 2019 RMD for all TIRAs from some other IRA account?
  • If Dad did not take his full 2019 RMD, then Mom became responsible for completing them by 12/31/2019. She would take the remaining 2019 RMD from her (Inherited or owned ) TIRA ASAP, and file a 5329 requesting waiver of the penalty. The IRS almost always grants the waiver. Note that the RMD will be taxable to Mom in the year of the distribution (2020).
  • Stay safe.

Thank you.  Very helpful. Be safe yourself.

Dad’s traditional IRA combined with moms.  Brokerage took RMD for both after the combining into mom’s IRA. 1099-R to mom is for the total RMDs – mom + dad.  Any concerns? Special tax forms.  Thank you.

Good, the RMDs are now satisfied. No special reporting or forms needed.
