Spousal RMD
I have a new client who has inherited her spouses IRA back in 2014
Spouse:
date of birth 08/17/1955
date of death 06/24/2014
Normally our client would begin taking RMDs in 2026 when her spouse would have turned 70 1/2. Will our client be required to begin her spousal RMDs in 2026 or can she take advantage of the 72 rule and begin her RMDs in 2027. I’m thinking she will need to start in 2026???

This is always confusing. Sec 114 of the Secure Act states that the new age 72 applies to those who attain age 70.5 after 12/31/2019. The deceased spouse in this case falls into that category, therefore client does not start beneficiary RMDs until the year decedent would have reached 72. Client also needs to determine when she should do the spousal rollover based on her own age.
